Bonanza: The Slot That Started the Megaways Era
How the Megaways Engine Works
Bonanza is laid out across six reels, but the number of symbols on each reel changes from spin to spin. Every reel can show anywhere from two to seven symbols, and when all six are full you get the maximum 117,649 ways to win. There are no fixed paylines here. Instead, matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right form a winning combination, no matter their vertical position. An extra horizontal reel sits above the central reels, adding more symbols into the mix and pushing the way count higher. This constantly changing structure is what makes each spin feel unpredictable.
Symbols and Reactions
The reels are stocked with prospector gear and gemstones. Higher-paying symbols include gold bars and mining tools, while colored gems fill out the lower end of the paytable. A dynamite symbol acts as the wild and substitutes for standard symbols to help complete wins. The game uses a Reactions mechanic, also known as cascading or avalanche reels: whenever a winning combination lands, those symbols are removed and new ones drop down to take their place. Fresh wins can chain together from a single paid spin, and each reaction sets up the slot's most important feature.
Free Spins and the Unlimited Multiplier
The heart of Bonanza is its free spins round, triggered by landing the scatter symbols that spell out G.O.L.D. Four or more scatters award 12 free spins to start. During the round, an unlimited win multiplier comes into play: it begins at 1x and climbs by one with every successive reaction. Crucially, this multiplier never resets for the duration of the feature, so a long chain of cascading wins can build into something enormous. Landing further scatters during the round retriggers additional spins, with no cap on how many times this can happen. This is where Bonanza's headline wins are made.
RTP, Volatility and Max Win
Bonanza runs at a 96% RTP, which sits right around the industry average. Its volatility is high, meaning wins can be infrequent in the base game but considerably larger when the free spins and rising multiplier align. The maximum win on the game is 26,000x your stake. Reaching anywhere near that ceiling depends almost entirely on a strong free spins round with a multiplier that has had time to climb, so patience and steady balance management matter more here than on lower-variance slots.
Betting Range and Mobile Play
The game caters to a broad spread of players, with spins available from 0.20 up to 20.00 per bet. That range keeps it accessible to cautious players while still leaving room for those chasing the bigger multiplier wins. Bonanza is fully optimized for mobile, so the six reels, reactions and free spins all play smoothly on smartphones and tablets as well as desktop.
Try Bonanza in Demo Mode
The best way to understand Bonanza's rhythm is to play it. Our free demo lets you spin the reels with virtual credits, watch the way count change, trigger the reactions and get a feel for how the free spins multiplier builds, all without spending anything. It is a useful way to see whether the slot's high-volatility nature suits your style.
If You Enjoy Bonanza
Bonanza opened the door for a wave of Megaways and bonanza-themed slots. If you like its mining setting and reaction mechanics, you might also enjoy Wild West Gold Megaways for more frontier-flavoured Megaways action, the popular fishing-themed Big Bass Bonanza, or its larger sequel Bigger Bass Bonanza. Each takes the high-variance, feature-driven approach that Bonanza helped make standard.
